Hazel Barker arrived in Australia from Burma in 1967 courtesy of her English great grandfather and Portuguese grandmother, during the days of the White Australia Policy. She completed her Arts degree at the University of Western Australia, with History as her major and English as her sub-major. After teaching English at various High Schools in Perth, Canberra and Brisbane, she took early retirement to devote more time to writing. She writes short stories, memoirs and historical fiction. Hazel now lives in Brisbane with her husband, where they grow vegetables, roses and orchids, and enjoy reading, writing, bushwalking and opera.
