May-Kuan LIM was working as an engineer in a Malaysian newsroom when she realized she would rather write stories than broadcast them. From 2007 to 2015, she wrote a monthly parenting column for the Borneo Post. As she interviewed friends and experts, writing became a means of searching for answers. During this time, she also wrote and self-published her father’s memoirs. In 2010, she began teaching at TAFE in Adelaide. Her students inspired her to begin collecting refugee stories. This book project won her an Arts SA Emerging Mentorship Grant, through which she benefited from the tutelage of poet and non-fiction writer, Mark Tredinnick. She blogs at
