Omega Writers is the home of the CALEB Award. CALEB stands for Christian Authors Lifting Each other’s Books, and is the brainchild of Anne Hamilton, a former President of Omega Writers. Click here to find out more about the history of the CALEB Award (in progress).

There are two main objectives to the CALEB Award:

Support excellence in Australasian Christian books by encouraging and educating writers, regardless of genre.
Encourage excellence in Australasian Christian books by recognising and rewarding our best writers across a range of genres.

The CALEB Award will open for entries on 1 April, and entries will close on 30 April (4pm Sydney time). All Australian and New Zealand Christian writers are invited to enter.

CALEB Published

The CALEB Award has been running since 2010, and has showcased some of the best in Australian and New Zealand Christian writing. We are in the process of compiling a complete list of finalists and winners in each category. Click here to read the list, and please let us know if you have any of the information we are missing.

The categories for the 2019 CALEB Published Award are:

  • Children’s Picture Books
  • Young Adult fiction
  • Memoir/biography/autobiography
  • Fiction (excluding romance and fiction with romantic elements*)

*Romantic elements: the romance is not the central plot focus, but removing the romance would damage the story.

For 2019, entries must have a copyright date of 2017 or 2018, as displayed on the copyright page. Books with a 2016 copyright date which have not previously been entered in the CALEB

The 2020 CALEB Published Award will include:

  • Romance, women’s fiction, and fiction with romantic elements*
  • Non-fiction excluding memoir, biography, and autobiography
  • Children’s fiction (early reader to middle grade)

*Romantic elements: the romance is not the central plot focus, but removing the romance would damage the story.

Entries will need to have a copyright date of 2018 or 2019.

We hope to add additional categories in future years, such as:

  • Devotionals
  • Short fiction or novellas

CALEB Unpublished

But the CALEB Award isn’t only about published books. We aslo seek to encourage writers through our Unpublished Award. This provides writers with the opportunity to receive unbiased feedback on their manuscrip, and many of our Unpublished winners have gone on to become published authors.

The categories for the CALEB Unpublished Manuscript are:

  • Adult fiction (odd years)
  • Middle Grade/Young Adult fiction (even years)

We hope to add a non-fiction award in the future.
