Workshop 1 – ‘Publishing Panel’ with Deb Porter and Rachel Sweasey
Deb Porter is a publisher and editor with Breath of Fresh Air Press, and Rachel Sweasey is an editor with Rhiza Press. In this interactive panel, they’ll give us the inside scoop on what publishers look for in a manuscript. They’ll have great tips on pitches and book proposals, and will answer all of your questions about publishing. They’ll also both be taking publisher appointments at the retreat.
Workshop 2 – ‘Safe Harbour: From Concept to SBS’ with Simon Kennedy.
Simon Kennedy co-created the mini-series ‘Safe Harbour’, which screens on SBS in March, 2018. In this workshop, he’ll discuss how he and his colleague came up with the concept, how they pitched it, and what was involved in script development right through to the final product. This workshop would be relevant for anyone who wants to know how to develop a story, whether based on fiction or nonfiction.
These 30-minute appointments provide the opportunity for you to talk to either Deb Porter or Rachel Sweasey about your manuscript. Bring a sample of your work-in-progress and be prepared to make an elevator pitch (i.e. a brief pitch in which you say what your book is about and why it’s amazing). Deb Porter will take appointments regarding fiction and nonfiction aimed at adult or young-adult audiences. She will be available on the Friday and Saturday of the retreat. (N.B. If you are only coming on the Saturday, we will ensure your appointment is on that day). Rachel Sweasey will take appointments on fiction aimed at adults and young adults. She will only be available on the Saturday. If you book a publisher appointment, please indicate in the comments box whether you would like your appointment with Deb or Rachel. Of course, feel free to book an appointment with each of them if you would like.
We offer Gluten-free, dairy-free and nut-free options. Enter your requirements in the Comments box when registering.
